Stuttering is No Joke

Just think for a minute, when was the last time you saw a person who stutters in the media that wasn’t portrayed as a stereotype such as: a mentally-ill person, a villain, or the comic relief. We at The Brand Service wanted to highlight and educate people on a serious issue that doesn’t receive the attention it needs. We wanted to put a positive message into the world during a time when many people needed one.

The problem

People Who Stutter (PWS) have been negatively portrayed in the public arena for far too long. Negative comments and misconceptions have even found their way into today’s news, entertainment and politics. We need to be reminded that stuttering isn’t funny or a cognitive issue.

The solution

We started the #StutteringIsNoJoke campaign, which is focused on education and outreach. We encouraged PWS to share their voice, telling their social media followers that stuttering is no joke.

Our campaign focused on October 22, International Stuttering Awareness Day.

We began by creating a website that educates visitors on stuttering, and highlight the stereotypes about PWS that are common the media and entertainment.

Participants were encouraged to join the campaign by sharing their voice, and recording a video of themselves saying “Stuttering is No Joke.”

If a visitor wanted to participate without recording themselves, downloadable images were provided for social media.

Community participation was amazing.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

Over 50 PWS and friends of PWS participated in the Stuttering is No Joke campaign, reaching an even wider audience. We believe that the power of design, combined with activism and an outpouring of support, can touch the lives of countless individuals and made our world a better place for everyone who lives in it.
